Oxford: Bodleian Library

We started our travels at Paddington Station, which is where they filmed part of a scene of my favorite movie of all time, About Time. So that was a very exciting place to begin my day. (Also if you haven't seen this movie, please stop reading this post, go watch the movie, then come back and read my post because Oxford libraries were absolutely incredible experience and you should read about it.)

It was a very rainy day when we got to Oxford. We found our way to our first stop, but browsed around a bit in the Bodleian gift shop before our tour began. Upon entering the courtyard you could see that above each entryway was a sign indicating what subject was taught there. Though these do not necessarily line up today as Oxford has grown a bit since its beginnings, the choice to keep that small bit of history hanging despite the changes keeps the roots of the university in sight and I thought that was a nice touch!

The Bodleian Library was so full of history and dedication to the preservation of knowledge. Despite this, there were instances over the years in which books were removed and destroyed from the shelves, and there were book burnings in the courtyard in front of the library's doors. Despite the ups and downs of preservation, the library currently has approximately 12 million books and has expanded into different, offsite locations in order to hold their collections. This library is also where scenes from the Harry Potter movies were filmed. I will include some photos below!

This is where they shot the infirmary scenes and the dancing scenes from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
